Since my dog was lost I trawl through all of the web sites day and evening in the hope that I will get her back. I cannot believe the number of dogs lost and stolen that are not found and reunited with their owners, let alone the lists of dogs for re-homing.

Lost Dogs.ie appears to be the best site as people are able to submit and update details themselves.

I think some serious investigation is needed into what is happening to the dogs that are being stolen. Where are they ending up? If they are being sold on, how is this being carried out and where? And what can be done to stop this happening?

In the Irish Times on a daily basis, there are ads for different types of dogs being offered under Pets. I have rang some of these numbers; some are animal shelters but how do we know that all of these are shelters? If they are legitimate animal rescue centres, they should state the name of their organisation and website address in their advert. I had one person ring me back from an 'unknown number' to ask me what dog I was interested in. When I said I had lost my dog they told me to contact the DSPCA and the various pounds. Maybe all these are legitimate rescue or foster care centres but that should be transparent in the ad.

If there is a racket going on around the country and dogs are being stolen by those who know they can make a fast few hundred Euros, why are the Gardai not looking into this more?

For myself I lost a beautiful little dog that I had only just bought and was looking forward to giving her a forever home. So I feel deeply for all those who are missing their pets right now, whether lost or stolen. In the sense that I have not got my dog back there is the chance that she has been kept by someone who took her in and did not bring her to a vet to have her scanned (she is microchipped).

I think there needs to be more awareness amongst the public as to what to do if they find a dog and I agree with the above post that people being offered a dog for sale or otherwise should be encouraged to check the websites to ensure that the dog they are being offered is not listed as lost or stolen.

Definitely some major investigation required by the Gardai into what is happening to all these stolen dogs.

I only had my little dog 'Willow' for three days and in one horrible moment I lost her in the park near my home when fireworks terrified her and she ran off. Although she was not initially stolen, I agree with the 'Bermuda Triangle' theory as it's almost as if she vanished off the face of the earth. She is a pedigree Shih tzu, micro chipped. Someone must have found her by now. Lost Dogs.ie to me is the best site I have seen for tracing a lost pet. It's so easy to use and easy to see; very well laid out. I hope that people come to use this site more, especially if someone tries to sell them a dog that might have been lost or stolen. Well done to the people behind this great service!

Great story. For children and adults, few things are more stressful than loosing a loved, family pet. Lostdogs.ie is a unique and valuable service.

Did John see the very similar St.Bernard which was on the "found" list on this website, in Athenry, Co.Galway recently? I phoned the number given and told her about John having been on the Gerry Ryan Show this morning (10th Sept) and the lady said she would follow it up. Hope John finds Lance. It is desperate when a pet goes missing. He is so big, it would be very difficult to hide him for very long. I hope he is found before his epilepsy kicks in. We will be saying prayers to St.Anthony! He still works!

Honey was my dog and was missing for 6 days. After much media she was released by the people who took her and was found by Ann Finn and her husband in Newcastle cemetery wet and frightened. Ann and her husband took her home, dried her, fed her and gave her some warmth and affection. They then set out on their mission of finding Honey's owner.. me! It took two days but they found me through this site and then by bringing Honey to the vets who coincidentally had a missing Honey poster on their wall. The vet scanned her microchip to confirm that it was in fact Honey! I will be always be eternally grateful to Ann and her husband for the trouble they went to and for their true kindness that they showed. I would also like to thank everyone else for their kind words, help, hope, kindness and prayers. Much love, Tara xx

Hi Reggie. Simply emailing the photo from the phone would be very easy for most people. As more people join twitter it's a fantastic platform for staying up to date. So many ideas!!

Hi there! I've been using twitter for a little while now and I'm very impressed (I'm a low tech person so being impressed is a sign of how easily I could get the hang of it!!). It could be a very useful tool in this application. I can email photos with a message from my basic mobile phone directly to my twitter (twitpic email address). Possible uses: uploading photos of lost dog posters and stray dogs while out and about, follow on twitter and never miss any new posting to this site. What does anyone think?
